How Many School Uniforms Does Your Child Really Need? A Parent’s Shopping Guide

The right number depends on your family's routine.

You don't need to buy an entire closet of uniforms. Start with your school's dress code, how often you do laundry, and which items your student wears each day. Use the guide below to plan a practical wardrobe.

01 / QUICK START

A Simple School Uniform Shopping Checklist

Our original Anton Uniforms shopping list organizes suggested quantities by one, two, or three loads of laundry per week. Use the chart below as a planning reference, then adjust for your school requirements and family routine.

02 / LAUNDRY PLANNING

How Often Will You Wash Uniforms?

Daily or every-other-day laundry: A smaller rotation may work, especially if clothes dry in time for the next school day.

Twice-weekly laundry: Consider enough tops and bottoms to bridge the days between washes.

Weekly laundry: A five-day supply of daily tops and sufficient bottoms gives more flexibility. A spare set helps with spills, weather, or last-minute schedule changes.

03 / YOUR SCHOOL'S DRESS CODE

Check Approved Styles Before You Buy

Some schools require embroidered polos, specific colors, approved bottoms, PE uniforms, or designated outerwear. Even if a basic polo looks similar, it may not meet your school's requirements. Begin with the Anton Uniforms school directory to find the collection for your student.

04 / ARIZONA AND BEYOND

Plan for Heat, Cold Classrooms, and Changing Seasons

In Arizona, lightweight school-approved polos and shorts may be everyday essentials, while a sweater or fleece can still be useful in air-conditioned classrooms. Families in cooler climates may need more approved layers. Buy based on your school's dress code and the weather your student actually experiences.

05 / SMART SHOPPING

Save Money Without Sacrificing Readiness

Start with the items your student needs immediately, then add extras once you know which pieces they wear most. Check the fit before purchasing several identical items, especially if your student is moving from youth to adult sizing. Consider growth, but avoid buying garments so large that they interfere with comfort or school appearance.

07 / QUESTIONS PARENTS ASK

Frequently Asked Questions

Are three school uniform polos enough?

They may be enough if you do several loads of laundry each week. Our original guide suggests 6–8 short-sleeve tops for one load per week, 3–5 for two loads, and 2–3 for three loads.

How many pairs of uniform pants or shorts should I buy?

Our original guide suggests 5–6 pairs of pants for one laundry load per week, 3–4 for two loads, and 2–3 for three loads. Adjust for your student’s actual wardrobe and needs.

Do I need a separate PE uniform?

Only if your school requires one. Check how often PE occurs and whether the uniform must be worn to school or changed into during the day.

Should I buy the next size up?

Use your student's measurements and the specific garment's size chart. A little growing room may be useful, but overly large garments can be uncomfortable. Review return eligibility before purchasing adult sizes for K–8 students.
