What Do Size Labels Mean?

Y = Youth Sizes
Labeled with a “Y” prefix (e.g., YXS, YS, YM). Designed for children and younger teens.
Example: YXL = Youth Extra Large

No Prefix = Adult Sizes
Standard adult sizing: S, M, L, XL, 2XL, etc.
Example: M = Adult Medium

Prefix = Adult Sizes
Standard adult sizing: AS, AM, AL, AXL, A2XL, etc.
Example: AM = Adult Medium

H = Half Sizes (Extended Fit)
Relaxed fit with extra room in waist/hips. Marked with an “H” suffix.
Example: 10H = Girls Size 10 Half

J = Junior Sizes
Tailored for teens/young adults. Labeled with “J” suffix or noted as Junior.
Example: 5J = Junior Size 5

M = Mens/Boys Sizes
May be numbered (e.g., 28M, 32M) or standard (S, M, L). Also used for boys’ items.

G = Girls Sizes
Often numbered (e.g., 7G, 10G) and may or may not display “G”. Applies to girls/youth items.

Find the Right Uniform Size

Uniform sizing can vary by garment and fit. Taking a few measurements before ordering is the best way to choose the right size for your student.

Start with your student's measurements, then use the garment charts below to find the best fit.

If your student falls between sizes, choosing the larger size may provide more comfort and room to grow.

Youth Size Quick Reference

Not sure what YXS, YS, or YM means? Use this as a quick starting point for youth alpha sizing.

This is a general size reference. Fit can vary by garment, style, and manufacturer. When measurements are available, use the garment-specific chart below.

Fit tip: Measurements are more reliable than age or grade. For polos and outerwear, sizing up is often the safest choice when a student is between sizes. For fitted bottoms, compare waist and hip measurements before sizing up.
How to Measure

Getting the right size starts with accurate measurements. Use a flexible measuring tape over lightweight or fitted clothing, then compare your student’s measurements with the chart for the garment you’re ordering.

If your student falls between sizes, consider the larger size for comfort and room to grow. For fitted bottoms, compare both waist and hip measurements before sizing up.

  • Height: Measure from floor to top of head while standing straight
  • Chest: Measure around the fullest part
  • Waist: Measure at the natural waistline
  • Hips: Measure around the fullest part
  • Inseam: Measure from the crotch seam down the inside of the leg to the desired pant length

Tip: Measure your student each time you order. Growth and garment fit can make a previous size a less reliable guide.

Fit tip: PE shorts are unisex. Use this conversion as a starting point and compare your student's measurements with any product-specific sizing information when available.

Boys
Choosing a fit: Regular provides standard proportions through the waist and seat. Slim is designed for students who need a narrower fit. Husky provides additional room through the waist and seat without simply increasing garment length.

Moving From Youth to Adult Sizes?

Youth and adult sizes use different size scales, so an Adult Small should not be treated as simply the next size after Youth XL. Compare your student's measurements with the applicable garment chart before ordering an adult size.

Important for K–8 uniforms: Adult sizes AL and larger are not eligible for return or exchange. Please double-check sizing before ordering these sizes.

Dennis Uniform Sizing Reference:

  • Y = Youth Sizes — Designed for children/teens. Labeled YXS, YS, YM, etc.
