What Do Size Labels Mean?

Y = Youth Sizes
Labeled with a “Y” prefix (e.g., YXS, YS, YM). Designed for children and younger teens.
Example: YXL = Youth Extra Large

No Prefix = Adult Sizes
Standard adult sizing: S, M, L, XL, 2XL, etc.
Example: M = Adult Medium

Prefix = Adult Sizes
Standard adult sizing: AS, AM, AL, AXL, A2XL, etc.
Example: AM = Adult Medium

H = Half Sizes (Extended Fit)
Relaxed fit with extra room in waist/hips. Marked with an “H” suffix.

If your student falls between sizes, choosing the larger size may provide more comfort and room to grow.

Fit tip: Measurements are more reliable than age or grade. For polos and outerwear, sizing up is often the safest choice when a student is between sizes. For fitted bottoms, compare waist and hip measurements before sizing up.

School Uniform Sizing FAQs

What is the difference between youth and adult uniform sizes?

Youth sizes are designed for children's proportions, while adult sizes generally have different chest, waist, and garment-length measurements. Do not assume a youth XL fits the same as an adult small. Compare the measurements for the specific garment before ordering.

What do YXXS, YXS, YS, YM, and YL mean?

These labels mean youth extra-extra-small, extra-small, small, medium, and large. The quick reference above provides typical numerical size equivalents, but the garment-specific charts below are the better guide to fit.

How do I choose a size when my student is between sizes?

Compare your student's current measurements with the relevant chart. For polos and outerwear, the larger size may allow more comfort and growth. For fitted shorts, pants, skirts, and skorts, check waist and hip measurements before sizing up.

What size should I order for unisex PE shorts?

Use the unisex PE shorts chart: YXXS corresponds approximately to 3–4, YXS to 5–6, YS to 7–8, YM to 10–12, and YL to 14–16. These are starting points, not guaranteed measurements.

Where do I find uniforms approved for my student's school?

Start with the school uniform collections and choose your school before selecting a size. Uniform requirements and approved styles can vary by school.

How to Measure

Getting the right size starts with accurate measurements. Use a flexible measuring tape over lightweight or fitted clothing, then compare your student’s measurements with the chart for the garment you’re ordering.

If your student falls between sizes, consider the larger size for comfort and room to grow. For fitted bottoms, compare both waist and hip measurements before sizing up.

Height: Measure from floor to top of head while standing straight
Chest: Measure around the fullest part
Waist: Measure at the natural waistline
Hips: Measure around the fullest part
Inseam: Measure from the crotch seam down the inside of the leg to the desired pant length

Tip: Measure your student each time you order. Growth and garment fit can make a previous size a less reliable guide.

Moving From Youth to Adult Sizes?

Youth and adult sizes use different size scales, so an Adult Small should not be treated as simply the next size after Youth XL. Compare your student's measurements with the applicable garment chart before ordering an adult size.

Important for K–8 uniforms: Adult sizes AL and larger are not eligible for return or exchange. Please double-check sizing before ordering these sizes.

Dennis Uniform Sizing Reference:

Y = Youth Sizes — Designed for children/teens. Labeled YXS, YS, YM, etc.
